Choosing backup power

How to compare generator installation quotes fairly

The short answer

Put proposals side by side by scope before comparing totals. Identify the exact generator, transfer arrangement, supported loads, fuel work, site work, approvals, startup and exclusions. A lower number is not necessarily a lower price for the same finished project.

General guidance, not installation, repair, engineering or legal instructions. Confirm equipment-specific and current local requirements with the appropriate professional.

Make the equipment identifiable

Ask for model numbers and the intended fuel configuration. Record whether transfer equipment and load-management components are included. If a proposal offers alternatives, have each option described separately so you can tell what changes in the finished system. Avoid relying on a brand name and a single kilowatt figure as the complete specification.

Find the gaps between trades

Ask who coordinates electrical work, fuel work, excavation, the equipment base, landscape restoration and inspections. An allowance is not the same as a fixed included price. Request a written explanation of conditions that could change the total and how additional work would be approved before it proceeds.

Compare the handoff, not just installation day

A useful proposal explains how startup, owner orientation and records will be handled. Ask who will help with a warranty question and whether ongoing maintenance is a separate agreement. Generator Care pricing is project-specific and has not been published; request a written proposal rather than treating an online industry price as your quote.

Put it into practice

Add these columns to your comparison

  • Equipment and operating limits: exactly what is included?
  • Site and trade work: who owns each task?
  • Allowances and exclusions: what could change the price?
  • Completion: what records, checks and orientation will you receive?

Should I choose the largest generator quoted?

Only if the design supports your actual needs. Ask why each bidder selected that capacity and which assumptions differ. The most useful comparison is the service each system delivers to your property, with its limits clearly explained.
