Sizing & household loads

Should your generator back up an EV charger?

The short answer

Only include vehicle charging after deciding how it ranks against essential household needs. A charger can be a significant load, and available charging settings do not by themselves establish generator compatibility. Have the installer evaluate the actual charger and proposed backup arrangement.

General guidance, not installation, repair, engineering or legal instructions. Confirm equipment-specific and current local requirements with the appropriate professional.

Describe the transportation need

Think about the trips you would still need to make during a prolonged outage and the reserve you normally keep in the vehicle. A household with another transportation option may prioritize differently from one that relies on a single EV. Share the practical need rather than simply asking to back up every garage circuit.

Clarify when charging would be available

Ask whether the proposed plan excludes charging, permits it under defined conditions or manages it behind more important loads. If a charging limit is part of the design, request written guidance identifying who sets and verifies it. Do not assume a vehicle or charger app setting makes an otherwise unassessed connection suitable.

Treat future charging as a design change

Tell the generator team before adding or replacing charging equipment. Keep the charger specification and installation record with your generator documents. A second EV, a different charger or changed charging habits may warrant another review, even when the home and generator themselves have not changed.

Put it into practice

Questions for your assessment

  • Is charging essential, occasional or intentionally excluded?
  • What exact charger and settings are being evaluated?
  • Which household loads take priority over the vehicle?
  • What needs to be checked before adding another charger?

Can I assume vehicle-to-home backup is included with an EV?

No. That is a separate compatibility and installation question involving the vehicle, charging equipment and home electrical system. Ask the relevant providers to confirm the complete supported arrangement; do not treat it as an automatic feature of EV ownership.
