Generator care when you are traveling or away from home

The short answer

Before you leave, resolve known service issues, appoint a local contact and agree who will act on alerts. An automatic generator can support the property when you are away, but it is not a substitute for a person who can coordinate help when something changes.

General guidance, not installation, repair, engineering or legal instructions. Confirm equipment-specific and current local requirements with the appropriate professional.

Review readiness before departure

Check your records for upcoming service and unresolved recommendations, then contact the provider if anything is unclear. Do not wait until the day you travel to ask about work already known to be due. Tell the team if the property will be unoccupied and identify any essential systems that deserve particular attention in the planning conversation.

Give the local contact a limited, clear role

The contact should know whom to call, how to report observations from a safe location and who can approve service. They should not be expected to repair equipment, enter flooded areas or carry out unfamiliar operating procedures. Agree on safe access arrangements privately before a storm creates pressure.

Plan for missing information

If monitoring is installed, confirm authorized recipients and what happens when connectivity is unavailable. Keep offline copies of key contacts and relevant equipment information. Decide how you will respond if the generator cannot support the property; remote notifications alone cannot guarantee heat, water protection or other household outcomes.

Put it into practice

Before leaving the property

  • Review maintenance due dates and unresolved findings.
  • Name a local contact and a person who can authorize work.
  • Confirm alert recipients and provider contact arrangements.
  • Agree on a fallback plan if power or remote visibility is lost.

Will the service company automatically visit if I am away?

Only if a specific arrangement has been agreed. Ask about the actual scope and response process. Generator Care storm response depends on prior history, availability, conditions and safe access; no automatic visit should be assumed.
