The short answer
Read the exact message using normal, safe owner access and identify the model before interpreting it. A color or brief app notification is not a universal diagnosis. The correct manual and a qualified provider can distinguish a maintenance reminder from a condition that needs different attention.
General guidance, not installation, repair, engineering or legal instructions. Confirm equipment-specific and current local requirements with the appropriate professional.
Preserve the message in context
Write down the wording, code, time and where you saw it: controller, app or email. Include whether utility power was available and whether the generator was exercising or supporting an outage. A photo of a safely accessible display can be useful, but do not approach hazardous equipment just to document it.
Do not diagnose by color alone
Different controllers use different indications. A search result for another Generac or Kohler product may describe a different system, even when the light looks similar. Avoid clearing the message, bypassing a protection or repeating resets before the provider has the information needed to advise you.
Use symptoms to choose the response
Smoke, a suspected fuel leak, a CO alarm or immediate danger calls for moving to safety and contacting emergency services. An ordinary alert without those hazards belongs in a service conversation, with urgency assessed from the actual condition and affected needs. Online requests are not monitored emergency dispatch.
Put it into practice
Send a useful alert description
- Exact message or code, not only the light’s color.
- Generator model and the source of the notification.
- Whether the generator is operating and utility power is available.
- Any recent service, unusual behavior or essential loads affected.
If the alert disappears, should I ignore it?
Keep a record and ask whether follow-up is appropriate, especially if it repeats or coincides with changed operation. A disappearing notification does not explain its cause, and an app’s current screen may not represent the full event history.
