When something changes

Your standby generator did not start: what to report safely

The short answer

First address any immediate danger. If the property is safe, report the outage status, what the generator did or did not do, and any message visible through normal owner access. A no-start symptom has multiple possible causes; it cannot be diagnosed reliably from silence alone.

General guidance, not installation, repair, engineering or legal instructions. Confirm equipment-specific and current local requirements with the appropriate professional.

Keep the safety decision separate

If you notice smoke, a suspected fuel leak, a carbon monoxide alarm or other immediate danger, move to a safe location and call emergency services. Do not approach the equipment to collect information. If someone depends on powered medical equipment, use the prearranged contingency plan and seek urgent assistance when needed.

Describe the sequence without experimenting

Tell the provider whether utility power is out, whether the engine attempted to start and whether there was any recent service or alert. Record exact wording from an ordinary display or app only if safely accessible. Do not open electrical compartments, handle fuel components, jump-start the unit or repeatedly reset and restart it to test a theory.

Make the service request useful

Include the property address, a reachable contact, known equipment details and any blocked access. Explain which essential systems have lost power so the provider understands the situation. A request is not a confirmed appointment; during storms, response depends on service history, availability, conditions and safe access.

Put it into practice

Have this information ready if safe

  • Utility outage or normal utility service?
  • No engine response, an attempted start or an unexpected shutdown?
  • Exact visible message and time, without opening covers.
  • Last service, affected systems and a safe contact method.

Should I clear an alarm before calling?

Preserve the message and ask for model-specific guidance. Clearing a message can remove useful context without resolving the underlying condition. Do not bypass a protection or rely on a reset sequence meant for another controller.
