The short answer
A starting estimate is usable propane available to the generator divided by its fuel consumption per hour at the expected load. Use the exact model’s consumption data and account for other appliances sharing the tank. The installer and propane supplier should confirm those assumptions and whether the fuel system can supply the equipment.
General guidance, not installation, repair, engineering or legal instructions. Confirm equipment-specific and current local requirements with the appropriate professional.
Separate a tank label from available fuel
The tank’s nominal size is not a promise that its full labeled volume is available to the generator at the start of an outage. Ask the supplier what usable quantity should be assumed and whether other appliances share it. Have the installer use the correct model’s fuel-consumption data rather than an internet estimate for another unit.
Compare more than one operating scenario
For illustration only, 100 usable gallons divided by an assumed 2 gallons per hour gives 50 hours. These are arithmetic examples, not specifications for your generator or a promised runtime. Request estimates for priority-load and heavier-demand plans using the actual model’s data. Demand and conditions can change, so neither result is a guaranteed deadline. Ask what information to monitor through approved, safely accessible means.
Plan replenishment before a storm
Confirm the supplier’s ordering process and discuss how weather, access or high demand may affect deliveries. Keep gates and the delivery route in the planning conversation. A bigger tank is not automatically the right answer; placement, approvals and the fuel system need professional review as a complete arrangement.
Put it into practice
Ask for a written runtime estimate with
- The exact generator model and proposed fuel configuration.
- The usable fuel quantity assumed at the start.
- The demand scenario and any shared propane appliances.
- A replenishment plan and clear limits on the estimate.
Can a tank gauge tell me exactly how many hours are left?
Not by itself. The remaining time also depends on consumption and the operating plan. Use the supplier’s guidance and the model’s documentation; do not let a rough calculation replace a delivery plan or professional fuel-system assessment.
