Repair or replace your generator: a practical decision framework

The short answer

Start with a diagnosis and compare complete options. Consider the needed repair, the rest of the system’s condition, available support and whether the generator still serves the property’s needs. Age alone does not establish that replacement is necessary or that repair is the better investment.

General guidance, not installation, repair, engineering or legal instructions. Confirm equipment-specific and current local requirements with the appropriate professional.

Ask what the repair actually resolves

Request a description of the diagnosed issue, proposed work and any limitations or additional concerns. Separate a confirmed defect from a recommendation to investigate further. Ask whether parts availability or another unresolved condition could affect the result or timeline before authorizing a narrowly described repair.

Compare with a complete replacement scope

A replacement proposal should explain which existing components can remain after assessment and which cannot. Fuel supply, transfer equipment, placement and local requirements still need review. Comparing a full replacement project with only the first diagnostic charge on a repair will distort the decision.

Recognize the decision signals

A repair becomes a more useful option when it resolves a diagnosed problem and the existing system still meets your backup priorities. Replacement deserves closer consideration when the assessment identifies several significant concerns, support limitations or a mismatch with current needs. Compare the complete scopes and unresolved issues. New HVAC, vehicle charging or additions may change the decision even if the generator can be repaired.

Put it into practice

Ask for both options in plain language

  • The diagnosed problem and any remaining uncertainty.
  • Repair scope, exclusions and expected support for parts.
  • Replacement scope, retained components and approval requirements.
  • How each option supports today’s and tomorrow’s priorities.

Is there one age when every standby generator should be replaced?

This guide does not set one. Condition, service history, use and property needs differ. A documented assessment and comparable proposals are more useful than an arbitrary age threshold.
