Maintenance & records

Does a generator need service after a long outage?

The short answer

Maintenance may become due during a prolonged outage, as well as afterward. Follow the exact model’s time- and running-hour requirements; do not wait for utility power to return if a required check or service becomes due. Arrange model-specific guidance and any necessary interruption with your qualified provider. After the outage, report runtime, alerts and unusual operation.

General guidance, not installation, repair, engineering or legal instructions. Confirm equipment-specific and current local requirements with the appropriate professional.

Make a short outage record

Write down when the outage began and ended, whether the generator operated continuously and anything unusual occupants noticed. Distinguish estimates from actual recorded hours. Include whether an alert appeared during the outage, after utility power returned or only in an app; the sequence helps the provider ask better follow-up questions.

Separate maintenance from a reported fault

A routine service request and a report of smoke, fuel odor, abnormal noise or a shutdown are not the same thing. Tell the provider about unresolved symptoms before accepting a maintenance-only scope. If there is suspected fire, a fuel leak, a CO alarm or immediate danger, move to safety and contact emergency services rather than waiting for an appointment.

Arrange any operating interruption deliberately

Model-specific instructions govern maintenance during extended operation. Do not follow a generic shutdown, cooldown, refueling or restart sequence from an unrelated generator page. Ask the qualified provider what applies to your unit and coordinate any necessary interruption with occupants and equipment users.

Put it into practice

Include in the post-outage request

  • The approximate outage duration and recorded hours, if available.
  • The last service date and any outstanding recommendations.
  • Exact alert wording and the time it appeared.
  • Any essential loads affected and access limitations at the property.

Can I wait until the next annual visit if the engine still runs?

Do not assume so. Ask whether the accumulated hours or observed condition require earlier attention. Continuing to run and being up to date on maintenance are different questions.
